Barra MacNeils to headline 56th annual Broad Cove concert

Cape Breton Post

BROAD COVE — The Barra MacNeils will headline one of the longest-running summertime traditions in Cape Breton this weekend.

The 56th annual Broad Cove Scottish Concert is set to take place Sunday with a long list of the island’s most talented fiddlers, pipers, dancers and singers set to take the stage. The outdoor concert will run from 3-9 p.m. on the grounds of St. Margaret’s Parish in Broad Cove, which is located three kilometres north of Inverness on Route 19.

Lois MacIsaac, one of the organizers of the event, said the concert is a real family event and a tradition that people look forward to each year.

“There’s the love of the culture and there’s the love of the event itself and there’s the pride that it’s gone on so long and that their parents and grandparents have taken part in it,” she said, noting local children and adults alike help out with various aspects of the concert, from the canteen to manning the gate.

From 3-6 p.m. the lineup of musical entertainment includes Kenneth MacKenzie, Glen MacEachern, Kenneth MacLeod, Marion MacLeod, Harvey Beaton, Coisir an Eilein, Gerry Deveau, Kinnon Beaton, Betty Beaton, Swing du Suette, Marie Aucoin, Bill MacDonald, Douglas Cameron, The Pellerines, the Broad Cove Boys, Caroline MacLellan, Beth MacLellan, Glenn Graham, Rodney MacDonald, Scott Macmillan, Brian Doyle, Sheena Boucher, Tessa Boucher, Jeff MacDonald, Paderuig MacDonald, Katie MacLeod, Scotch Four, Aaron MacDonald and Neil MacQuarrie. The Barra MacNeils will then close out the concert, performing from 7-9 p.m.

“We think we have a really good product,” said MacIsaac.

She noted there is plenty of parking, washroom facilities, and a canteen on site, as well as a beer tent for those 19 and older.

For more information on the concert go to www.broadcoveconcert.ca. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the gate. Tickets can also be purchased in advance at www.ticketweb.ca. Children under 12 are admitted for free.

“It’s the best bang for your buck anywhere. Where can you see the Barra MacNeils and 20 other equally gifted people for $15?” said MacIsaac. “The grounds are beautiful, it’s a very relaxing place to watch a concert. I can’t think of a better place to be on a Sunday afternoon.”
